Assistant Professor Archival Studies



The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strongly international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. There are almost 1,000 employees affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 8,000 students.

The Faculty of Humanities offers assistant professors the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers at research institutes that - partly as a result of their multidisciplinary approach - are world-renowned. Moreover, you will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed.

Together with other new assistant professors you will participate in an introductory programme. You will be supervised during the first year of your appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of the appointment. Based on the candidate's educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration. The introductory programme includes earning the 'basic training qualification'.

Job description
Media Studies is searching for a qualified assistant professor for the Archives and Information Studies Team. Candidates will be expected to conduct research, develop and teach courses, and supervise students within the framework of the programs of the MA Archival Studies and the archival components of the BA Cultural information Studies. These programmes are situated within Heritage Studies in the Faculty of Humanities. The ideal candidate will be expected to creatively contribute to the ongoing process of redesigning these programs within the context of a new Media and Information program cluster, which also includes digital humanities and journalism.

Requirements
  • Relevant PhD degree, or PhD defense date scheduled before start of contract;
  • a strong knowledge of contemporary archival theory and social contexts of archival use and of contemporary records management and electronic records issues;
  • experience in research and excellent research skills, evidenced by publications in renowned international professional journals / book form;
  • outstanding didactic abilities and / or training, a strong commitment to teaching; evidence by an educational portfolio;
  • teaching experience at the university level;e
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment; affinity with ICT in academic education;
  • willingness to develop in a interdisciplinary capacity, capable of functioning at all levels of more than one study programme;
  • organisational experience and skills; willingness and ability to take on administrative roles;
  • enthusiasm, an interdisciplinary attitude, a reliable team worker;
  • thorough knowledge of Dutch and English; non-native Dutch speakers must achieve fluency in Dutch within two years.
Appointment
The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years. Subject to satisfactory performance, this will be followed by a permanent position. The gross monthly salary will range from €3,259 (scale 11) - €5,070 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week).
