Position at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), the iSchool at The University of British Columbia invites applications for a full-time position to begin July 1, 2014, subject to final budgetary approval. The position is expected to be filled at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates should demonstrate achievement of, or potential for, excellence in teaching, research, and service in an interdisciplinary environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and conduct research in the area of library and information studies, broadly interpreted.

Applications are encouraged from candidates with research and teaching interests relating to digital collections, including specialization in areas such as: digital libraries; data and information management; data/text mining and analytics; information retrieval; systems design, programming, evaluation and implementation; health informatics; digital humanities; digital media, social media; or semantic web technologies. We are seeking applicants who complement the strengths of the faculty at the School, demonstrate a strong research record appropriate to their experience, and have the ability to forge interdisciplinary research and/or teaching relationships within the School and beyond. As the School builds and strengthens its identity as an iSchool, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a dynamic community of scholars shaping the future of the School and to work with outstanding Masters and doctoral students.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or solid indication of imminent completion) in a field related to the teaching and research areas of the position.

Internacional Symposium on Archival Migration

The 6th Annual ACA@UBC International Symposium, “Archival Migration: Destruction, Repatriation and Memory,” will address the ethics, theory and praxis of archives and records in transition or transitory states through such topics as repatriated records; truth and reconciliation; community archives; recordkeeping in the developing world; the rights of the forgotten; and the right to be forgotten.

The Symposium will challenge and inform members of the profession, visiting experts, and students with rigorous and thoughtful conversation on professional issues that have significant consequences for human rights, the preservation of memory, and archival practice worldwide.

Dodson Visiting Professor of Archival Studies

The University of British Columbia holds an international reputation for excellence in advanced research and learning. It is located in Vancouver, Canada, one of the world's most beautiful and culturally diverse cities. The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), the iSchool at UBC, is pleased to invite applications for the Dodson Visiting Professorship named in honour of Suzanne and Earl Dodson.

This is a competitive position that provides funds to enable the successful candidate to spend an extended period of time, normally an academic term, engaged in research and teaching with the iSchool and UBC Community. Academics at all levels from all countries are encouraged to apply. Applicants will normally hold a doctoral degree, and currently be employed in an institution of higher education.

This year's call is for a Visiting Professor in Archival Studies, who will bring expertise and an active record of scholarship in archival studies, intended as a broad area of research covering all different aspects related to creation, management and preservation of documents. Preference will be given to candidates who have a proven track record of high quality research and experience in teaching and mentorship. This is an opportunity to work with well-known senior scholars at the iSchool as well as an outstanding group of junior faculty members active in areas such as digital diplomatics, digital records forensics, records management, visual analytics, and information risk management. While all applications will be considered, preference will be given to candidates whose research interests align with those of one or more faculty members within the iSchool.

This Visiting Professorship offers the opportunity to interact with the talented and engaged students in the MAS Program by teaching up to two courses. The Professor will be fully integrated into the research culture at the iSchool and will be expected to attend research talks and events, interact with doctoral students and present his or her research at a colloquium, open to members of the iSchool and the community.

The Dodson Visiting Professorship funds this position for one term in the amount of $15,000, which can be supplemented through teaching (up to two 3-credit courses) to reach $30,000.

International conference on "The Memory of the World in the Digital Age: Digitization and Preservation"

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program, UNESCO, in collaboration with the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies and the University Library of the University of British Columbia, and in partnership with ICA, IFLA, IASA, ICOM, WIPO, Google, MIcrosoft and others, is holding an international conference on "The Memory of the World in the Digital Age: Digitization and Preservation" on September 26-28, 2012 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and conduct research in the area of archival studies, broadly interpreted. Applications are particularly encouraged from candidates with knowledge in areas of archives theory and practice that complement the strengths of the archival program and the faculty at the School; a strong research record appropriate to their experience; and the ability to forge interdisciplinary research and/or teaching relationships within the School and beyond. As the School moves into a phase of growth and new leadership, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape the direction of archival education for the 21st century, and to work with outstanding Masters and doctoral students.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a field related to the teaching and research areas of the position, or anticipate early completion of the doctorate within six months following the position start date.
